Design Behaviour
Interesting and useful site for new approaches to sustainable design....
" 'design-behaviour' is a resource specifically developed to support designers and engineers in exploring how design (in its broadest sense) can influence user behaviour to reduce the social and environmental impacts of products during use."

Postgraduate courses - a list
This post is to creat a list of PG courses that are specialists in areas of design and innovation.
Sustainable design and sustainability
Students interested in sustainable design can pursue courses specifically in sustainable design, or they can pursue courses which are more general courses in sustainability. All courses have different interpretations of sustainability, and different focuses, and should be thoroughly researched.
Specific sustainable design courses:
MA Sustainable Product Design: http://www.ucreative.ac.uk/index.cfm?articleid=9219
MSc Sustainable Product Design, Bournemouth: http://courses2.bournemouth.ac.uk/Course.aspx?course=117
General sustainability courses:
MSc Human Ecology, CHE: http://www.che.ac.uk/mambo/content/view/181/1/
MSc Environmental Sustainability, Edinburgh: http://www.cecs.ed.ac.uk/
MSc Holistic Science, Schumacher College http://www.schumachercollege.org.uk/
Industrial Design
MA Design Practice, Northumbria: http://vision.northumbria.ac.uk/ma/
Interaction Design
This is a unique course in Interaction Design that is informed by design anthropology perspectives and technological design practice. It is based in a department which is internationally leading new approaches to interaction design. Additionally, successful course applicants can gain EU funding to cover course fees.

Observation - resources
The last ten year's of so have seen the rise of observation as a qualitative method for inspiring and informing design and innovation. IDEO have tended to be the organisation making the most effort to promote this approach via their work and publications from their researchers/engineers. Here are two good starting points on this....
'Thoughtless Acts?' by Jane Fulton Suri
This work shows at observation as an approach to design research. Often such work is undertaken in-depth by 'Design Anthropologists', but it is can also be quick design research method for designers/engineers. For this work, there is a collaborarive website http://www.thoughtlessacts.com/ and also a small, pocket-sized, hardback book - also discussed on the website. The small book is a very nice publication and great for inspiring ways of approaching observation for design research. It very much focuses on people-object interactions in different types of environments and social circumstances. The website is very useful for seeing how this method plays out in different ways. The observations in the book and site could be a great way of inspiring/informing a design project.
There is 1 copy of this book in the main library with another 9 on the way.
'Everyday Engineering' by Andrew Burroughs
This work follows on from JFS's work above. However, this time AB writes more about observation as a way of contuniually informing and relfecting his practice as an active engineer. It is a really nice book and should be inspiring to any engineer/designer. Here much of the observations are of 'things' that have been affected, mostly unintentionally, in some way, and show up an idea or observation. Again, lots of the observations could inform ideas for design projects. The book is again a small, hardback, pocket book in a similar format to JFS's book. And once again, there is a really nice site with loads of great visuals: http://everydayengineeringbook.com/
5 copies of the book have been ordered for the library.

Visualising Information - resources
A useful link that shows a multitude of approaches to communicating information through visual diagrams:
http://www.visual-literacy.org/periodic_table/periodic_table.html
But the best work on this subject, I have found, is the classic work of Edward Tufte on The Visual Display of Quantitative Information:
http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/books_vdqi
There are 4 copies of this excellent book in UoS main library.
Edward Tufte's site is well worth a look for all manner of thinking and methods on visual information design - including some stuff on Interface Design:

Please add any more links on this theme.

Inclusive Design - resources
Incluisive Design toolkit
http://www.inclusivedesigntoolkit.com/
A very useful and comprehensive toolkit on Inclusive Design, commisioned by BT, and produced by the Cambridge Engineering Design Centre together with Sagentia and the Royal College of Art, Helen Hamlyn Centre.
The 'bible' of Inclusive Design, is the book 'Inclusive Design: Design for the whole population'. This is a large, landmark volume on philosophies, methods and approaches to Inclusive Design. It is written by leaders in the field: John Clarkson (Cambrdige Engineering Design Centre); Roger Coleman (Helen Hamlyn Centre, RCA) and Simeon Keates (Cambrdige Engineering Design Centre). There are 5 copies of this book in the main library.
Another book, which is a bit like a condesnsed version of the above book, is 'Countering Design Exclusion: An Introduction to Inclusive Design' (Keates and Clarkson again). We have 4 copies of this currently in the main library and I have ordered another 6 as of April 08.
